The Atlanta Workshop on Collective Impact and Backbone Design Function will be in the main Conference Room located on the 10th floor of the James H. “Sloppy” Floyd State Office Building (also called “Twin Towers”) across from the Georgia State Capitol on Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive, bounded by Jesse Hill Jr., Drive and Piedmont Avenue.
The Georgia State Station for the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) is located in the lower level of this building. The Georgia State Station is one station east of the Five Points station, where the North-South and East-West MARTA lines connect. You will have to enter on the Balcony Level from MARTA but you will then have to take the escalator down to the Plaza Level to go through security desk at the West Tower side. Our volunteers will be stationed with ‘DOE Workshop’ signs. Ask them for help when you see them. Take the elevator up to the 10th floor. Once on the 10th Floor, look for the sign or volunteer directing you to the 10th Floor Conference Room.
PURPOSE
With funding support from the National Science Foundation’s Inclusion across the Nation of Communities of Learners of Underrepresented Discoverers in Engineering and Science (NSF INCLUDES), the Georgia Department of Education (GaDOE) is hosting a two day workshop for NSF INCLUDES Launch Pilot grantees to learn how to develop backbone functions for their Computer Science/STEM education focused Collective Impact initiative. The goal of the workshop is to help the Launch Pilots develop strategies to maximize CS/STEM education outcomes for diverse community based initiatives.
Training opportunities at the workshop will include:
- A full day of training on the Collective Impact model and Backbone Functions facilitated by national Collective Impact expert, Jeff Edmondson, from StriveTogether/ KnowledgeWorks.
- A half of day of ‘flash talks’ by Launch Pilot grantees to share their proposed backbone functions for their community’s CS/STEM Collective Impact initiative and receive peer and subject expert feedback. It will be facilitated by one of the workshop’s organizers, Khurram Hassan.
- A ‘lessons learned’ session with participants on trying to design backbone functions for a CS/STEM focused Collective Impact effort co-facilitated by Khurram Hassan and GaDOE’s Deputy Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction, Caitlin Dooley (also an associate professor in Georgia State University’s College of Education and Human Development).
- Portions of the workshop will be live-streamed via YouTube to broaden participation of any interested Launch Pilot participants or other interested stakeholders (NSF staff, CS/STEM education advocates).
