This course is intended for health practitioners engaged in planning and implementing NCD programmes.

Who is teaching this course?

Shanthi Mendis is an expert in Global Health and was former Senior Adviser/Director, Prevention and Management of Noncommunicable Diseases in the World Health Organization (WHO), Geneva, Switzerland. For nearly two decades, she led WHO’s  technical support and innovative training initiatives in low and middle income countries and contributed to moving  the global agenda forward in noncommunicable diseases. Dr Mendis is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of London and Edinburgh and of the American College of Cardiology. She started her medical career in the United Kingdom and prior to joining WHO, practiced Medicine in the United Kingdom and the United States, and was engaged in undergraduate and postgraduate medical education as Professor of Medicine in the Faculty of Medicine, Sri Lanka. Her areas of expertise are global public health, medical education, internal medicine, cardiology, research, health policy development, and capacity strengthening in developing countries. Dr Mendis is a founding Member of the Geneva Learning Foundation.

The course has been designed and kept as practical as possible with this need in mind, particularly in the context of low- and middle-income countries.

The Geneva Learning Foundation is offering this course through the Scholar Partnership, with the University of Illinois College of Education and Learning Strategies International (LSi).

Costs for individuals and organisations

The course may be audited at no cost to individual participants without certification.

Certification will require successful completion of all course requirements as well as completion of a summative assessment at the end of the course. This assessment will involve expert evaluation of the project developed during the course and additional examination to validate knowledge, skills, and behaviours. The cost of this assessment has been set at 990 Swiss Francs (CHF) per participant.

Organisations whose staff participate in the course will be invited to contribute to recovering its costs. The amount of this voluntary cost contribution has been set at 990 Swiss Francs (CHF) per participant. This includes the delivery of a certificate upon successful completion of all course requirements. Supplementary tutoring and support is also available at cost.
